West Bromwich Albion look set to make former Birmingham and Aston Villa midfielder Craig Gardner the first man through the door at the Hawthorns for the new season.

A move back to the midlands looks on the cards for the 27 year old who has been let go by Sunderland at the end of the season.

Talks have taken place and now it’s just a case of a medical and some fine tuning of a contract, then he could be a Baggie as early as next week.

Gardner came to Blues at the start of 2010, but after just 18 months with the club he made a £6 million move to the Stadium of Light.

However, in the season just gone he was unable to hold down a regular place in the first team and manager Gus Poyet decided that his time on Wearside was now at an end.
