Blues set for 4-5-1?

Throughout Blues’ pre-season the 4-5-1 or the 4-4-1-1 has been used at some point in every game. Saturday`s visit of Sporting Gijon also proved evidence that Alex’s men will not be trusted to defend in our usual two banks of four.

Although the formation is normally seen as defensive, I would argue it`s simply different. Going forward it, if the ball stays on the grass it just offers different movement within the ranks, and pulls a centre back forward. Benitez behind McFadden’s nimble feet I feel would work with the 4-4-1-1.

Granted its more defensive if someone who is that one behind the striker sits in with the midfield, but he most likely will not, so it`s essentially a free role, which would suit Sebby or Chuco nicely. It does take away the long ball option; strictly speaking its halving blues chance of a successful long ball, there’s simply less people to chase it. Where ever it may be.
