Blues winger David Cotterill has been selected in the Wales squad for their game against Moldova in September. Whilst it is not a surprise that Head Coach Chris Coleman has opted for continuity after leading his side to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, Cotterill`s form at club level has been sporadic.

Blues have had an average start to the season, picking up five points from four games. While this is not disastrous, certain players appear to be under performing, with Cotterill a main culprit.

The 28 year-old keeps his place in the Blues team purely based on his crossing and dead ball ability. But so far this season, his set pieces have been inconsistent and there is a feeling in the stands that he could work harder.

Blues are vulnerable down their left hand side and while Jonathan Grounds takes most of the brunt, the left back is rarely supported by Cotterill when the Welshman takes up a wide left berth.

The big frustration with Cotterill is that Blues fans know he can do better. Ability wise, he is a quality Championship player and on his day, he is Blues` main provider of goals. But turning up half-hearted for whatever reason, be it injury, tiredness or attitude, cannot continue.

Blues manager Gary Rowett is a massive admirer of the Welshman`s talent but needs to show him that he is not un-droppable. With new signings Che Adams and Greg Stewart waiting in the wings – and Viv Solomon-Otabor establishing himself as a bona fide first team player – Rowett has other options available should he wish to utilise them.

Perhaps with time away from the firing line, Cotterill can return and prove to the fans he can still be an effective player. But until that happens, he must give one hundred percent in front of a set of fans who are rapidly losing patience with him.
