Birmingham City manager Gary Rowett will be left with mixed emotions on the transfer front in the coming days.

On one hand, Rowett will be left frustrated by the long pursuit of Robert Tesche coming to nothing. On the other hand, the Blues boss will feel buoyant if he closes in on the loan signing of Diego Fabbrini from Watford.

Nottingham Forest manager Dougie Freedman has been impressed with Tesche during the clubs pre-season training camp and has signalled his intent on keeping the German.

Blues did table an offer but were told to wait while Freedman ran the rule over his troops.

The blow will be softened significantly if Fabbrini completes the loan switch in the coming days. Quique Flores, Watford`s manager, has decided that Fabbrini can go, with Middlesbrough and Blues the only English clubs to have made enquires.

The 24 year-old playmaker was an instant hit with the St. Andrew`s faithful during a short loan spell last season and they will be keen to see the Italian in royal blue once again. The former Udinese man captured imaginations with his ability and skill and was a joy to watch.

Rowett had hoped to bring in both of the midfielders to complete a big part of his Blues jigsaw, but the failure to land Tesche will leave him searching for an alternative.

Fabbrini`s move to Blues is not a formality, as suggested on some social media platforms.

Our source close to Blues said- “The club are working hard to get the deal over the line. It is now all down to the player, who has interest from elsewhere. Diego enjoyed his time at Blues and is seriously considering the options in front of him”.
