It is not Rafa Benitez, but Cristian Benitez. Sky Sports is reporting that Birmingham have made an official bid for the 23 year old Ecuador striker.

Benitez, who is currently playing in Mexico for Santos Laguna, has been impressive at both international and club level and is being chased by several clubs. Benitez has been linked with Wigan, PSV Eindhoven and Villarreal.

According to Benitez`s advisor, Barry McIntosh, told Sky Sports News ‘Birmingham have made an official offer for the player.`

‘Naturally, the offer from Birmingham is being seriously considered, but in the past 24 hours there has been a number of other interested parties in England,` McIntosh went on to say.

Birmingham have yet to bring anyone in, but it is believed that Alex McLeish is looking to bring in up to 10 players in the off season, and most recently Portsmouth defender Djimi Traore has expressed his desire to sign up with newly reported Birmingham.

Goals were a problem for the Blues last season, so it is important they get a player that can fill that gap, and it seems McLeish is looking to swoop in for Benitez before the others get a chance.

The amount of the bid has not been confirmed, but McIntosh did say, ‘ As far as how much a player is worth, he is only worth what somebody is prepared to pay for him.`
