Birmingham Short of Bodies

Birmingham City are going to be a few bodies too light when they travel to Fulham after failing to land three targets on transfer deadline day.

Birmingham missed out on unnamed loan deals, Lewis McGugan and an international player from Europe during the anticlimactic deadline day.

During the transfer window David Edgar was allowed to leave on loan to Huddersfield town, a move some fans have seen as a bad one given the injury to Michael Morrison.

Mark Duffy and Denny Johnstone have also left on respective loan deals.

Upfront, there are the likes of Thomas, Donaldson, Novak and Zigic all battling it out for one spot up front. With that said, I do think Rowett is likely to offload and redefine the striking options once he gets chance.

Behind there are three attacking midfield roles. The central of those causing some concern. When Shinnie doesn’t play, Blues are certainly lacking something in that area.

Lee Novak is always willing to play anywhere asked of him but if he was given the choice it does seem he wants to be up front. Playing him behind the striker doesn’t make sense to me. So this area is one that needs an extra body in to support Shinnie.

Gray is being considered as a back up in that position, but he failed to make an impact against Norwich there. Blues do have rotation options on either side with Gray, Dyer and Cotterill being able to chop and change their sides.

Behind we have the two battling midfielders, Gleeson and Davis have been great over the past month and I’m not so sure we have the cover if either of those were to pick up an injury.

The future prospects for the central midfield roles are looking bright.

Finally, there is the centre back position. Spector did well against Norwich and Blues proved there is life without Morrison, although he is a big miss.

Will Packwood is also returning from injury and should Blues bring in a player we could end up with a stock pile in the position.

The injury to Morrison is not as bad as first thought but it will take a few weeks to get him back. Rowett ruled out an immediate return but remained hopeful.

All in all the club do plan on bringing in another few players just to be on the safe side, but periods like this have to be expected. It will be worth remembering that there is a manager in the process of reshaping the team, and with that you can’t always have one in one out.

Football just isn’t that clear cut. Provided there are no last minute injuries, Blues will ride their luck through to the loan window.
