Birmingham City ran out 2-1 winners over a struggling Rotherham after a dominant first half that saw them go in comfortably on the front foot.

A second half readjustment meant that Rotherham went back to a 4-4-2 system and were able to cause Birmingham a lot more problems in the latter period.

Blues continued to fashion chances as their adversarys attempted to force their way back into the game.

Goals from Robert Tesche (27′) and Clayton Donaldson (43′) put Birmingham in the driving seat before the half time whistle.

Rotherham got one back through, former Birmingham loanee, Matt Derbyshire (48′) to set up a nervy second half for both teams.

Lloyd Dyer got another chance to revive his Birmingham career as he replaced a tired Demarai Gray on 67′ minutes. There was no place in the starting team for David Davis as he had to settle for a sub appearance replacing Shinnie on 82′.

As I predicted Rotherham had most of their shots from long range, some 60% of them in the end, the other 40% they did manage from inside the 18 yard box. And, as thought, they did go down their right hand side with more of their attacking creative play.

Overall Birmingham were more than deserving of the 3 points, although I do emphathise with the effort put in by the away side in the second half, they left themselves with too much to do at half time.

Clayton Donaldson was the best player of the pitch in my opinion, he has become something of a key player for us this second half of the season, and to see him getting a goal was pleasing.

Robert Tesche also put in a very good performance in midfield and I would like to see Davis come back in to partner him in the middle of the park.

Birmingham will now look to their next fixture against Bournemouth. The last time these 2 teams met it was the end for Malcolm Crosby at the club as Blues were beaten 8-0 in what was one of their worst defeats ever.

Its been 2 years since Birmingham last beat Bournmouth (0-2, 14 Dec 2013)
