Well, Tuesday was an interesting day wasn’t it Birmingham City fans. Bakary Sako was the subject of a £4 million bid from the club and he could become our most expensive player since Nikola Zigic signed for us.

But the real question is, is the Mali international really what Blues need at this moment in time? Well, there are a whole host of answers that could be thrown up for that question, both showing positives and negatives.

In today’s market, £4 million is actually quite cheap but for a player who hasn’t completed a single game of football this season, it does seem like we are being bumped up in terms of price but what do you expect, everyone knows we have the money now.

For that amount that we are supposed to be paying, we are getting a winger who knows what it takes to be successful in this division and in all fairness, he probably played his best football whilst at local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers while they were in the Championship.

During his two seasons in the second tier of English football, Sako scored 23 goals in all competitions, something which would be a welcome boost to what we already have because let’s face it, our wingers aren’t exactly blessed with a goal scoring touch at the moment are they!

However, despite his knowledge of the Championship and his ability to score goals in the division, I personally think there are other positions in the team that need to be addressed before he is brought in.

For example, Blues’ defence on Saturday against Brentford was absolutely horrendous and it has to be said that captain Michael Morrison is on his worst run of form since joining the club and that needs to be sorted out immediately.

The return of Paul Caddis is a welcome one because I think we have missed his attacking intent down the right hand side. Granted Jonathan Spector has done a fine job at right back but nobody bombs on like Caddis does and I think Gianfranco Zola will look to exploit that.

As well as adding to the defence, I would also say another striker is needed. Again, on Saturday Blues lacked any really attacking presence on the bench which was a worrying sign.

We need to have a striker to call upon from the bench and with Che Adams and Lukas Jutkiewicz both being on the pitch, we have nobody ready to come on from the bench and that is seriously worrying to see.

With all that being said, Sako would be a great addition to the squad should he make the move to St.Andrew’s but I feel like there are other positions that need to be addressed before he is signed.

Blues fans, do you agree that Gianfranco Zola needs to buy defenders and a striker before signing Bakary Sako? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
