Well, Tuesday was an interesting day wasn’t it Birmingham City fans. Bakary Sako was the subject of a £4 million bid from the club and he could become our most expensive player since Nikola Zigic signed for us.

But the real question is, is the Mali international really what Blues need at this moment in time? Well, there are a whole host of answers that could be thrown up for that question, both showing positives and negatives.

In today’s market, £4 million is actually quite cheap but for a player who hasn’t completed a single game of football this season, it does seem like we are being bumped up in terms of price but what do you expect, everyone knows we have the money now.

For that amount that we are supposed to be paying, we are getting a winger who knows what it takes to be successful in this division and in all fairness, he probably played his best football whilst at local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers while they were in the Championship.

During his two seasons in the second tier of English football, Sako scored 23 goals in all competitions, something which would be a welcome boost to what we already have because let’s face it, our wingers aren’t exactly blessed with a goal scoring touch at the moment are they!

However, despite his knowledge of the Championship and his ability to score goals in the division, I personally think there are other positions in the team that need to be addressed before he is brought in.

For example, Blues’ defence on Saturday against Brentford was absolutely horrendous and it has to be said that captain Michael Morrison is on his worst run of form since joining the club and that needs to be sorted out immediately.

The return of Paul Caddis is a welcome one because I think we have missed his attacking intent down the right hand side. Granted Jonathan Spector has done a fine job at right back but nobody bombs on like Caddis does and I think Gianfranco Zola will look to exploit that.

As well as adding to the defence, I would also say another striker is needed. Again, on Saturday Blues lacked any really attacking presence on the bench which was a worrying sign.

We need to have a striker to call upon from the bench and with Che Adams and Lukas Jutkiewicz both being on the pitch, we have nobody ready to come on from the bench and that is seriously worrying to see.

With all that being said, Sako would be a great addition to the squad should he make the move to St.Andrew’s but I feel like there are other positions that need to be addressed before he is signed.

Blues fans, do you agree that Gianfranco Zola needs to buy defenders and a striker before signing Bakary Sako? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!

  • Cannot see this move getting off the ground. Not a chance. If Zola wants to exit a Lee Clark situation,he needs to start building a team throughout. Forget the bits and pieces but start with next season in mind. Draw up a list of outgoings and work from there. My list would be to have replacements for Cotterill,Maghoma,Gleeson,MK and Tesche with Spector and Shotton considered regular bench players.Pointless bringing in a winger like Sacko who in the current team might be lucky to get a decent ball out to him.

  • Let’s face it we need every area of the team strengthening. Our midfield doesn’t create enough or score enough for that matter, out of Cottrill, Mags, Davis, Gleeson & Kieftenbeld who are our main 5 midfield/wingers they’ve scored just 8 goals between them, Juke has that many on his own. We also only have 4 goals from defence. We need a real leader in the team as well, Morrison for me has never been captain material & for gods sake let us bring in a decent left back in this window, we’ve needed one for about the last 3 seasons!!

  • Brooklyn – There is absolutely no point writing up a list for next season, Gianfranco Zola won’t be here next season! He needs to get players in that suit his style of play and he needs to do that within the first two weeks of the transfer window or we could be waiting a long time for his first win as Birmingham City manager

  • WhoRya – I couldn’t agree more about Morrison. When he came into the team he had the qualities in my opinion but they seem to have disappeared this season which is a worrying sign. Since he has come in, he hasn’t really had much competition or anyone to show him up but with Shotton coming in, the lad has looked considerably weaker as the season has gone on. We need at least four players in in my opinion

  • Brooklyn – the £11m available is for this window. If he can bring in a player of Sako’s ilk, and a couple of others, that’d be a start. Then in the summer, add another 3 or 4, and we’re starting to build a good squad.

  • I dont think the order in which the players are signed is of any importance because every department needs more quality and you can only sign players when they are available or affordable. Tom seems to think we can tell Sako to hold on for a little while because we need to sign a few others first, it will probably be in a week or two lol
The confidence of our defenders is shot to pieces and fragile. It isn’t down to Zola because we have been like this all season and playing the Rowett system of defending a lead or a draw wasn’t working anymore. The opposition are working this out and putting pressure on them which then leads to mistakes. Lumping it out was a form of defence and not attack, so now we are trying to play it out we simply don’t have the quality or confidence.

  • Sako would be a good signing for us with his power and goalscoring ability but I feel this is a bid for the media and fans to get hold of. They know that this won’t come of so are pleasing the fams by allegedly putting a bid in. We do need other areas of the squad sorting though. Me personally would look at the spine CB CM ST in this window as priority amd try to get a couple on top of that maybe loans. Toral would be a great shoutas well but doubt it will happen. KRO

  • I believe Sako is on a fair whack at Palace as he signed on a free. I’ve heard it could be as much as £70k a week. We will never agree personal terms. He also has a horrible injury record. Would be an improvement on what we have but so would’ve McManaman and he was a much cheaper option.

  • Why dues it matter which order we sign players in Loftus-Cheek on loan and Toral on a permanent deal with Sako . Would all be quality signings. We will then need a defender and a left back. Ryan Tafazolli. licked with us. He Looks a good prospect. KRO
