Luke Turner has his say on Clayton Donaldson’s position if we were to sign a striker…

At present, with the strikers we have available, Clayton Donaldson is pretty much a starter every game and it has been tough for the others to knock him off his perch.

But, with Gary Rowett intending to make signing a striker his priority this summer, could Donaldson be challenged even more for his position?

I would suggest that, if we were to sign a striker of decent quality, then we could potentially see a few changes in the way we play and who we play.

Players such as Mirco Antenucci, Danny Graham and Tony Watt have all been names linked with Blues over the past couple of weeks and all of them would be better competition for Donaldson.

It would certainly give Rowett more to think about and it might be a lot more tougher to decide who to play up front next season.

For what he’s done over the past two seasons, I think Donaldson would still be our number one striker but if he has a couple of below-par games, then I don’t think Rowett will waste any time in switching it up a bit.

For all the work he does for the team and the goals that he does score, it still doesn’t hide the fact that Donaldson isn’t as clinical as he needs to be for where we are now.

If we are to move forward and really mount a play-off charge next season, then we need to score more goals as a team and the signing of a more clinical striker will only enhance our chances.

There might even be a possibility for Rowett to play two up front if he can get someone in who can be a serious danger in the penalty area.

Someone like that could work wonders with Donaldson and it would take a lot of weight off his shoulders as we do rely on him quite a bit to produce the goods for us.

Hopefully, though, it will only motivate Donaldson to work even harder and score more goals for us. He still has a huge part to play in the team going forward.
