Gianfranco Zola was on the verge of being sacked by Birmingham City before he resigned, Vital Birmingham understands.

The Italian resigned on Easter Monday following a 2-0 defeat to Burton Albion at St. Andrews. Zola left Blues deep in relegation trouble after just two wins from 24 games.

But Vital Birmingham has learned that club directors had scheduled a meeting for the Tuesday morning after the Burton game and planned on relieving Zola from his duties.

The 50-year-old was under increasing pressure from the fans who turned against him for the first time on Good Friday during the draw with already relegated Rotherham.

After taking over from Gary Rowett with Blues in 7th and three points from second, Zola left Blues a single point above the Championship’s bottom three.
