You Can’t Win Them All – Millwall

In football you simply cannot win them all, no really … you can’t. Many thought it was a foregone conclusion that Birmingham City would once again roll over Millwall and yet it didn’t even come close to that.

A good record against a team eventually will prove to work against you. Blues had handed out so many defeats to Millwall I doubt their manager even needed to give a team talk at the start of the match.

Up to 8 new signings in their squad and they were more than likely well aware that the Blues fans were treating this as a home run before kick off.

On the other side of that, you had a Blues team that were very confident in their game plan and their ability to beat a team that looked destined for a drumming. Over confidence, mixed with an effective game plan meant Blues really didn’t deliver much in the game.

Millwall man for man were the better team, more motivated and quicker to the forefront of the game. Yes they had a system of two deep midfielders and an outstanding performer in Fabbrini to cause Blues problems but that doesn’t mean a good performance from each Blues player would not have been enough to win the game.

In a calming note on the game, it was a small margin of loss and Blues had chances to take the spoils despite a poor performance. I don’t think there is a worrying trend in these games, just days before Birmingham ran riot at Fulham and left us all questioning how it was only a point from the match.

And to borrow a point already been made by many, Blues are been given much more respect now. Teams like Norwich are happy to drop a man further back in order to mitigate Blues attacking threat. This is a positive thing to see, it does remove an element of risk for Blues in each game. Perhaps the chance of a draw increases when teams do this but the chance of a loss decreases.

No doubt Rowett will use this opportunity to approach games differently over the course of 90 minutes to utilise any possible avenues of getting a win. He has made it clear he is looking for players that offer something different tactically to the squad and for good reason.

Millwall had an ideal stage to end their terrible run against Birmingham and they took their chance to do so. Does it leave me questioning the Blues team selection or tactics? No, on another day we would have gotten away with what I would call a 6 performance.

Birmingham host Middlesbrough at home next and the promotion chasing northerners will be coming to win the game, something that suits Blues counter-attacking system well.
