It isn’t even a week since Gary Rowett was randomly relieved of his duties at Birmingham City but things must move on and talk of Gianfranco Zola using his Chelsea connections in the January transfer window are already doing the rounds.

And, like with most things transfer related, it got me thinking, which youngsters from the table topping Premier League side would actually work at Blues and who would they be willing to actually let go.

That was a question that I found quite difficult to find a solution to but after seeing a certain name pop up on Twitter, I suddenly started think, could Ruben Loftus-Cheek fit in at Birmingham City?

Now this is a move that I am sure most Blues fans would love to see happen, but with rumours surrounding the youngster that West Ham United and Newcastle United want him on loan, it could be a non-starter before the club have even enquired about him.

The 20-year-old midfielder already has some top flight experience under his belt having made 17 appearances in three season at Stamford Bridge, as well as making the occasional substitute appearance in the Champions League…not bad really for a kid is it!

As I understand it, Zola is the sort of manager who loves ball playing midfielders (well let’s face it, who doesn’t love someone who can pick out a pass from nowhere!) and Loftus-Cheek is the sort of midfielder who fits that bracket.

Okay, it would potentially mean pushing Reece Brown down the pecking order a little bit, and maybe even Robert Tesche (but is that a bad thing after Saturday), but surely bringing somebody in of his quality wouldn’t hurt the progression of Brown.

Having somebody in the squad who is the same age as him but playing at a higher level, surely that would only further the abilities that he already has.

I am sure that Zola has a list of names that he would like to sign and I am also 95% positive that he has probably already spoken to Antonio Conte about which players might be available to him and I think that Loftus-Cheek, should he be allowed to leave on loan, might be one of the players that he would be looking to bring in.

In terms of where he fits in at Blues, David Davis, Maikel Kieftenbeld and Stephen Gleeson would undoubtedly be ahead of him in the pecking order, but if Zola wants to play with three in midfielder or even with a diamond that requires him to play four central midfielders then I believe the England Under 21’s star would fit right in at St.Andrew’s.

Blues fans, do you think that Ruben Loftus-Cheek is something that might interest new boss Gianfranco Zola? Let us know in the comment section down below!
