Would David Cotterill being sold be disastrous for Blues?

Over the past few weeks, the future of Birmingham City winger David Cotterill has been fairly clouded with plenty of media outlets claiming that several Championship clubs were ready to meet his supposed £1.1 million buyout clause so I thought I’d ask myself the question, would losing Cotterill be a bad thing for the club?

There is not a right or a wrong answer to this question because there are pros and cons to the situation. The winger is still away with Wales at this moment in time but is yet to feature for his country during their incredible Euros campaign which might be why he is being linked with a move away from the club because everyone who is still left at the competition seems to be in line for a transfer.

If one of the rumoured teams were to come in for the 28-year-old then £1.1 million does seem like a bit of a steal when you consider how many chances he creates for other members of the team but in order for him to be able to make those chances, you have to catch him on a day where the ball sticks to his feet and let me tell you now, that isn’t every week in the Championship.

Although he was involved in eight out of our last nine goals in the league last season, Cotterill’s campaign was hampered with injury which is most notably the reason why he only found the back of the net four times, including goals on the opening day of the season and the final day as well.

The Cardiff-born winger has an incredible delivery from set pieces and if he was to go, I think we would really struggle to find somebody who can deliver a cross like he does or striker a freekick like he does so that would be the thing I think we would miss the most.

However, if he did leave, personally I don’t think it would be the end of the world because in football, there is always somebody out there who can replace a player who has left the club because at the end of the day, the club is bigger than one player.

I couldn’t turn round and say I’d have a replacement in mind if Cotterill did leave this summer, although Newcastle United’s Rolando Aarons does come to the front of my thoughts, but to my knowledge, I can’t think of many players who could replace the Welsh wingers influence in the Blues squad.

At the end of the day, if Cotterill was sold, I am sure he would only be sold if Gary Rowett had a replacement ready and waiting, but to my knowledge, Blues are keen to keep hold of the former Swansea City wide man for as long as they can.

Blues fans, what do you make of the recent speculation surrounding David Cotterill? Do you think the club would miss him? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
