Why Are We Unbeaten?

Why are we unbeaten seems like an easy question… We have not lost a game this season. But I like to delve a bit deeper than just scraping the surface of such questions.

The work rate shown by the players this season has undoubtedly had a positive impact upon the outcome of games. We have managed to press teams high due to the ever working Clayton Donaldson. This means that more teams have to play long balls which are easy to cope with for Birmingham’s competent defenders. It also allows us to rebuild attacks from the defence which was not all that obvious last season.

The work rate is also seen across the pitch; somehow the players look sharp. Maybe this was due to a good pre-season. The fitness gained from before the season even starts is pivotal and often gives players that extra edge to win first and second balls. Maybe the simple fact of being well prepared physically is the reason for such a good start?

My next theory is that we have started so well due to an improvement in the squad. Toral has come in and I think has been a real bright spark in the centre of midfield. He has not only contributed goals which is a bonus for a midfielder, but he has offered something different. He can collect Donaldson’s knock downs and is always anticipating where the big man wants to lay it off. This psychic ability is amazing considering how new they both are to each other.

Other signings such as big T in goal has also been a plus as he has made some outstanding saves, in particular against derby county where we secured a draw. Many of this was due to him. He has also saved a penalty and is looking very assured in the opening games. This gives confidence to the defence and helps to maintain clean sheets.

Lastly it is confidence. Players are really up for playing under Rowett as seen by contract extensions from Gray, Clayton and Cotterill to name just a few. This shows that the team is pulling in the same direction to achieve a common goal and it gives the players on the pitch the time to gel and get to know each other.
