Who Is Our Best Player?

Absence makes the heart grow fonder is a well known phrase that I was yet to experience until Clayton Donaldson got himself injured. Often, I have favourite players such as Morrison and Davis whom I enjoy watching. But if they’re not available, we have replacements who can step in and do a job almost as effectively.

With Donaldson, we took him for granted. He often looked clumsy and he always just did simple lay off’s which many fans thought was uncreative. But boy do we miss that. Gray is missing Clayton the most. Gray thrived off Donaldson’s ability to hold the ball up and flick the ball on. He thrived on crossing the ball for the big target man to prod him. It is no coincidence that Gray’s performances have gone down hill since the injury.

The sign of a good player is that you miss him when he’s gone and I am sure that the quicker he gets back on the pitch, the more we will get back to our winning ways because now we are stuck in a little bit of a losing streak that needs to be halted.

It doesn’t help that we don’t have much in terms of a replacement. I like to always have 3 players who can play 1 position just in case injuries or even tactical switches need to be deployed. We literally only had Donaldson. With Thomas and Novak out on loan, then has left us with the inexperienced Brock whom has yet to impress.

It also makes us dysfunctional. The flow has gone as we’ve had to adapt the style of play to a new striker and this has completely put the attacking players off their stride. Not to mention the key injury to Cotterill as well. No wonder the attack is taking its time to gel.

Another candidate I have for our best player is big Tom K in goal. He has made some crucial saves especially at the start of the season against the likes of Derby. These have literally won us points which could turn out to be crucial. I am delighted that we have managed to tighten things up at the back compared to recent years and I think that Tom has had a massive hand in this, excuse the pun.

The goalkeeper has to be able to organise the defence and therefore it is a crucial position. With Eardley and Grounds having a rough time of it recently, Tom has had to be really commanding when crosses have come in and he has achieved great success.

On balance though I would have to say that Donaldson is our best player. He has the work ethic of a trojan which isn’t appreciated at the time by many but his willingness to close down is unrivalled by many strikers. His goals are also a great attribute as at the end of the day, this is what wins you games.
