Within the last couple of days all the hype has been about Blues snapping up the long term services of young starlet Demarai Gray. In this series I will look at all the players within the clubs academy and professional ranks who I feel could make a similar rise in stature within the next couple of years.

Charlie Cooper is a young Central Midfielder who was among nine Blues youngsters to sign their first professional deals at the club in April. Out of those nine, only four were offered longer than a solitary year in professional football. Charlie was one of those, he will stay with the club until the end of next season after penning a two year deal.

The young midfielder has a hell of a lot to live up to with both his Grandad; Terry and Dad; Mark being former professional footballers. Terry most notably represented England whilst Mark actually played for Blues himself, Charlie will hope to follow in both of there foot steps.

He joined the club at the age of 10 from local side Castlehurst Colts, coincidently it was actually his Dad who brought him to the club as he was the U10s manager at the time. He his since progressed through the ranks at the club and has been compared to the likes of Gerrard and Iniesta by his colleagues, this is due to his ability to easily dictate a football match from the centre of the park with his profound passing and intelligent football brain whilst also smashing in the odd long range effort.

After impressing during a regular stint in last years U21 side, Charlie confirmed his abilities to the Blues coaches as he was part of that Birmingham senior cup winning side at St Andrews and put in yet another solid display. He was also part of the squad which travelled to Nuneaton Town for the first Pre Season match of the season on Tuesday, although he never got on, his inclusion in the travelling party highlights the fact that Gary Rowett must think highly of the midfield dynamo.

Do you feel Cooper has the ability to make it at Blues?

Who else do you think could make a breakthrough?
