What`s Next for Blues?

With the season now closed, we take a look at what the summer holds for Blues.

Firstly and most importantly right now to the fans will be the players on the pitch. With that being said, I`ve seen many a good squad sink under the wrong management; so Lets actually start with Lee Clark.

We conducted a survey on the site recently and most of you thought we have done better than expected this year, not that I am a Judge & Jury, but you are right. Finishing well clear of the drop has to be considered nothing short of a triumph, our squad realistically was not and is not big enough for a 50ish game season (cup runs included obviously), so for this Lee Clark you are credited. The balance has to have came from the staff and the manager maintaining that spirit in the players, most players need confidence and Clark really must have given it them.

With that being said I must say, its not all songs of praise. We have had some bad performances and periods during this season. Minus the strong finish which was also a little late according to Mullins we could have really been in a Wolves situation right now, and this is where I air some caution, this season was nearly dreadful. Faith or no faith. However, Mr Clark this is a results game and you got your results, this will be hopefully carried into next year and give us something to build on.

Now we need to look at the squad, and the question on everyone`s mind has to be who is leaving? because the squad is already small, young in places and in my opinion not good enough to achieve the same feat next year. Fahey, Caldwell etc have already gone we know this from previous articles from VitalBlues. So lets look at the squad,

David Murphy – Possible outgoing, great player in my opinion but his wages will be a decent amount baring in mind the squads he has been apart of, also those wages may not be worth the injury proness David Suffers from.

Curtis Davis – Tremendous contributions from him, year after year, he is as good as gone. Once the club is offered the right amount, which they will, he will be sold and I wish him well. At 28 I hope he gets to play his form years in the Premiership.

Marlon King – I would not be surprised to see something happen with Marlon, he is a good player on his day and there were clubs expressing an interest in January. Maybe his injury has put them off and could be a blessing in disguise. He is not an ideal role model I grant you this, but we do need this guy upfront for us next term.

Zigic – Well I think we would all like to see the Carling Cup hero leave the club, I would thank him for some memories and point to this situation as an example of what all club directors should avoid at any club our size. As far as I know he has a year left on his deal, don`t expect him to be going anywhere, because I don`t think he agent will let that happen.

Nathan Redmond – Now I`m saying this now but anything is possible, I do see this boy here next year and here is why. I don`t think many clubs are going to be willing to pay what Pannu think`s we should be getting for him, I know a lot of footy fans that support other clubs and they all rate Redmond much higher than I do, they think he is some kind of game changer that gets us three points every week, and because of these perceptions of him I think the price tag might be a bit stupid to which football managers may use their cooler heads and spend it elsewhere. I do think Redmond is a talent and we need him.

This concludes the senior players I have worries about, now assume we lose all five of these players, yes the wage bill might allow us to operate a little more in getting some freebies but nothing good can come of it I assure you, we are very thin on the ground. Young players like Kobi Arthur are not going to fair well in a relegation dog fight, which if nothing changes, we are going to be in.

I invite your thoughts, where do we need to strengthen if possible? Do you disagree? can we actually live on beyond the impending loses?

Bare in mind, Clark was denied £250k to sign Caddis and the books are yet to be balanced! The way I see it is the only answer now is to have the club sold, it can no longer support itself and without investment we stand to lose everything positive about Blues and eventually our ‘hot seat` will be a ‘cold seat` in the sense that absolutely nothing happens with it, no one will want to manage the Club that is Birmingham City Football Club est. 1875.
