Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger watched his side go down 2-1 to Birmingham City at Wembley in the cruellest of ways and then spoke to the press.

A disappointed Wenger revealed how he really wanted his side to pick up the cup, but at the same time defended his 20-year-old goalkeeper Szczesny whose error contributed to Birmingham’s winner.

‘I wanted to end our wait for a trophy today,’ said the Frenchman.

‘Both teams gave everything and congratulations to them – they have got their trophy.

‘But we have regrets with the way we conceded the (Martins) goal. What can you say? You have to be positive because he (Szczesny) is a young boy.

‘He has to pick himself up from that goal and hopefully he can do that.

‘When we conceded the goal there was no time for us to respond.

‘We have to pick ourselves up because the challenges ahead are massive. I wanted to end the wait (for a trophy) today. Now we will have to wait a bit longer.’
