Welsh International Could Solve Birmingham’s Goalkeeper Problems – Agree?

|

Fans have been talking about the goalkeeping position a lot in recent days, mainly due to David Stockdale’s outbursts on social media. We have also been linked with a Norwegian keeper in Orjan Nyland, but the Birmingham Mail believe we haven’t yet prioritised one player.

With that being the case, I thought I would suggest a keeper that not many have been talking about recently. Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward.

The Welsh international helped Huddersfield Town to promotion through the playoffs during the 2016/17 season, but he returned to his parent club for the beginning of last campaign.

Unfortunately, a back injury in the first half of the season meant he never really got a look in with the Reds. He made just one senior appearance in the Carabao Cup, in a 2-0 defeat to Leicester City back in September.

Since then, he has remained the club’s third choice behind Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet. Although, due to the German’s mistakes in the Champions League final, he could be given a chance to stake his claim for the number one jersey during pre-season, the feeling in the local media on Merseyside, is this is his last chance to impress Jurgen Klopp.

At 25 years of age, he isn’t a young keeper anymore. He is unlikely to want to be third-choice at a Premier League club for much longer. The Mirror (via HITC) reported earlier this month that Norwich and Swansea were interested in Ward, but there has been nothing since then to suggest that the player could be on the move.

Considering his experience of the Championship, I think he could be an excellent candidate either on loan or for a permanent move. He wouldn’t cost an excessive amount, and while there will be rivals for his signature, Garry Monk could offer him guaranteed first team football at a level he is already comfortable at.

What do you think? Would Ward be a good choice as our new no.1? Let me know in the poll:
