Now wasn’t that what we all needed, a bloody good hammering – ignoring the fact we were behind!

After the match Steve Bruce spoke to the press and admitted that at some point in the league a team will be on the end of one of those.

Fair enough it was only Wrexham, and yes it was a convincing win that belies the fact we were behind and struggled until they run out of puff to secure the match but at least it’s a sign of things to come possibly.

Now let’s do away with the talking and start turning the words into performances in the league.

‘We must have had five or six clear chances, which we’ve got to start taking.

‘That’s going to be the thing and I think one day some team is going take one (a heavy beating). We look as if we are a threat, especially with players like Bendtner, Dunn, Campbell and McSheffrey on the park. But we haven’t quite converted it yet.

‘If you look at the average age of that team, it was very young and it’s a big learning curve for them. But I was delighted the way they kept at it.

‘I think the keeper made a genuine attempt to get the ball. It is one of those rules which is hard to interpret at times.

‘It also ruins the games when someone is sent off like that. I’ve been there and it is horrible if it happens to you and I wouldn’t have wished that on Wrexham.

‘Taylor was terrific. They have always been there, him and Tebily. We bought Tebily five years ago and he was our talisman and he reminded us again what a good player he is.’
