Matthew Upson looks set to return to full training on October 1st.

After snapping his achilles tendon in the warm up against the Vile, Upson’s progress has been slow and steady as he’s bid to return to full fitness and regain his place in the side.

Speaking to IC Brum he said:

‘I’ve been doing a lot of pool and gym work, various circuits too.

‘And I am now functionally running out on the training pitches.

‘I have just got to get the power back in my calf, but otherwise I feel fantastic.

‘Quite a few weeks ago, I pencilled in October 1 when I wanted to be rejoining the main group in training, and playing football.

‘When I then step into a reserve game, I will decide as and when I feel ready.

‘But I want to be training with the rest of the lads, out of the physio’s hands, by October 1.

‘For the last four months I have eaten, slept and drank rehabilitation.

‘Everything else goes absolutely out of the window.

‘In terms of my future, I’ve just got to get fit. My only concern is getting back fitter, stronger, better and more powerful than I was before the injury – and I am on course for that.

‘That’s the only positive I can take out of this injury, that’s the only thing I can concentrate on.

‘The picture can change every day in football.

‘Look at how quickly I have fallen down: from playing every week to being injured and relegated.

‘All of a sudden, in that short space, the whole season turned on its head.

‘That gives you an idea of how things can go badly wrong. You can pick things up and do just as well quickly with the right application and attitude. But you cannot afford to look too far ahead.’
