SHEFFIELD WED 3 BLUES 0

If hitting the woodwork counted as a goal, Blues would he flying high this season. Three times this evening, Blues were denied by post and bar – eight times in the last five games.

Goals are proving very hard to come by for Gianfranco Zola’s team who once again had the lions share of the play.

Just to be clear, Sheffield Wednesday were more than decent yet 3-0 absolutely flattered them. Three simple goals, three points.

When you’re playing against a front three that possess quality in the magnitude that the Owls do, you can’t afford to give them as much freedom ad Blues did tonight. Sam Winnall, Jordan Rhodes and Fernando Forrestieri always looked threatening. But the most frustrating thing is, so did Blues.

Craig Gardner had a few efforts, one off the bar, Emilio Nsue hit the post, David Davis forced a great save out of Ashley Westwood, Blues created plenty of good openings.

Don’t look too much into the numerical result. Two of the goals were leaked as Blues pushed for an equaliser. Performance wise, it was OK. And I’m still sure that playing like we have tonight, Blues will win more games than they’ll lose.

We lack potency. Look at Rhodes, Winnall and Adam Reach tonight. Each buried the one chance that came their way. That is an attribute Blues cannot boast at present. We had 15 shots. That’s 162 shots in Zola’s 12 games in charge.

Going into the Preston game on Tuesday, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Zola revert back to the 4-3-3 system. The four man midfield diamond that worked so well against Fulham looked too narrow and laboured against an organised Wednesday side.

Take the performance, take the defeat, brush ourselves down and go again in midweek.
