Trading at Recession Busting Prices

It seems a strange question, but trust me, I am deadly serious when I say, is football going to defy the recession? For many weeks, and months, it has been argued that the recession will finally bring an end to the spending spree that has been seen in the game over the past decade. However, as we are now in a Recession, as our great leader keeps telling us, do you see any signs of football clubs counting their pennies?
Just look at some of the possible transfers that could take place this Summer:

Cristiano Ronaldo to Madrid (a monotonous topic, yes, but it could happen!)
Kaka to…well, whoever has more money.
Franck Ribéry to Manchester United/Madrid
Sergio Agüero, from Athletico Madrid to a club with a bit of cash to spend.
David Villa to…any calub he wants.
David Silva to Liverpool.


By my calculations, if all of these transfers take place, well in excess of £250 million pounds could change hands in the race to own the registrations of these players. And that is just 6 players. Even in England, the likes of Glen Johnson and Gareth Barry could go for big money this summer.

Clubs are spending. Make no mistake about that. Heck, even Blues are close to making their record signing in acquiring the services of one Christian Benitez!

Countless members of the footballing community have come out on record saying that football is heading for a crisis, but these people then go and spend £3 million pounds to acquire a new manager for another club…not naming names, of course.

Many football fans see football as a release. It`s a way of escaping everyday life. But, is football really that different from life now? To me, it`s almost as if football is a microcosm (or is it a macrocosm?) for the world we live in. Some clubs are fighting their way out of this worldwide recession by spending money, while others are taking another more drastic, cost -cutting approach to avoid bankruptcy and administration ( see Newcastle, Southampton, Northern Rock and LDV). The banks are unwilling to lend money to businesses so expansion projects are on hold in many areas (see Everton and Tata).

However, in other cases, organisations continue to push forward, believing that these changes will help to fight off money worries (see Cardiff`s new stadium, Blues improving stadium, and Disney). There is infighting within the hierarchy of some important organisations (see Liverpool, and the major political parties).
When you think about it, the links are quite spooky.
