Time To Give Birmingham Midfield Gem His First Team Chance – Agree?

|

The Birmingham Mail journalist Brian Dick was sufficiently impressed by Charlie Lakin’s performance in the 1-1 draw against Ulm at the weekend to devote a full story to the 19-year-old.

The midfielder has certainly impressed during the club’s pre-season tour of Austria, and many have said that the player has a great future in the game.

With the lack of movement on the transfer front and the absence of a midfield playmaker, there’s every chance he could be given more first-team chances by Garry Monk next season.

It may be too early considering he has had just 19 minutes of first-team action, which came in the FA Cup fourth-round replay against Huddersfield back in February. However, we are desperately short in creativity and giving the youngster a chance to shine to see if he has what it takes to unlock defences should at least be considered.

In ideal circumstances, a new playmaker should be near the top of Garry Monk’s shortlist of transfer targets, but with just three weeks left to go before the transfer deadline, getting any deals done is looking less and less likely with the reported embargo still hanging over our heads.

I would prefer to see players like Lakin introduced into the first-team gradually, but we have to find solutions to our goalscoring problems quickly. He could be the answer if given the chance. You only have to look as far as Wes Harding to see that giving youth the chance can pay off.

What do you think? Should the 19-year-old get his first-team chance? Let me know in the poll:
