Gary Rowett changed the system against Wolves to try and inject some life into his troops. It didn`t work. The three in central midfield left Blues lacking width and cohesion. In the second half he resorted back to the familiar 4-2-3-1 formation and Blues looked a far better side.

Then for some reason, against Fulham, Rowett opted for the system that didn`t work in the first half at Wolves. It was baffling. In the second half, he reverted back to the familiar 4-2-3-1 system and Blues looked a far better side.

See the pattern here?

Blues have taken two points from two games in which they should have come away with six. Because of the system used by Rowett, Blues were ineffective in the opening half of both games.

I understand why he changed it for Wolves – to try something new. It didn`t work. Move on. To revert back to it was a questionable decision.

Now I want to put on record (not for the first time) my admiration for Rowett and the incredible job he has done so far. But that does make him free from criticism.

On Saturday, we learned that Blues can play two systems, one being the old fashioned tried and tested 4-4-2. Unfortunately, the system with three central midfielders does not work.

When James Vaughan was introduced from the bench against Fulham, Blues looked dangerous and more than capable of playing with two up top. Clayton Donaldson would benefit from some help too.

You could argue that Blues’ missed chances were the sole reason for not winning the game. However, Blues don’t even create chances playing the system they did in the first half. It was a wasted 45 minutes.

With the 4-4-2 formation, playing Jon Toral may not be an option. The Spaniard is neither a central midfielder or a wide player.

After the international break, Blues travel to struggling Charlton needing a win to hold on to their slim hopes of the play-offs. I`d like to see Rowett be braver and bolder in his decisions and for Blues to take the game to the opposition from the first whistle. Maybe then, our goal scoring hoodoo on the road may be put to bed. If not, at least you had a go.

Rowett said himself that lack of goals may be Blues’ undoing. Now is the time to stand up and be counted.
