Time for Bad Referees to Face the Music

The standard of refereeing in the Football League this season has been nothing short of abysmal. Common sense seems to have disappeared and the outcome of games is often affected by appalling decisions.

Managers take plaudits during good times and face the music through the bad times – so why shouldn`t it be the same for referees?

You could argue that match officials should be interviewed after a game in a similar way to managers. Why should they be offered protection – even from managers and players – after consistently bad officiating?

I understand that referees are human and that from time to time mistakes are made. But the frequency of mistakes and bad decision making is growing. Admittedly, diving players and over reactions do not help. But when referees get their calls arse about face so often, you can see why frustration grows.

The system in which bad performing referees are demoted to a lower league is unfair. Why should a League Two side be forced to tolerate bad refereeing?

Referees, and even linesman if necessary, should be forced to explain decisions. Then, if consistently in the limelight for downright bad refereeing, they should be taken away from games and given further training.

If I`m consistently performing poorly at work, my job is on the line. It`s time for referee`s to face the music.
