Three positives to take from the Sheffield Wednesday game

Birmingham City lost 2-1 on Saturday to play-off rivals Sheffield Wednesday in a game that was dominated largely by Gary Rowett’s men.

However, despite a Gary Hooper double in as many minutes, I think there are still positives that can be taken from the game.

To begin with, Clayton Donaldson, who turned 32 over the weekend, scored his first goal since early November and it was no more than he deserved.

Some fans will look on his performance as a poor one but you have to remember, as long as he keeps getting into those positions he will score goals for Blues.

When he slotted home from six yards, his celebration showed just how much it meant to him to get that goal and it was understandable because he should have had one 10 minutes prior to him actually hitting the back of the net.

I personally think that the goals will start to come at a more regular rate now for the Jamaican international and if he continues to link up well with on loan Arsenal midfielder Jon Toral, I am sure he will score over 10 goals this season.

Along with the Donaldson goal being a positive to take from the match, I think we also need to focus on the overall performance of Jacques Maghoma.

During his stint with the Owls, many of their fans deemed him to be lazy and poor with the ball. However, he proved them wrong throughout Saturday’s game in my opinion.

When he had the ball at his feet he was quick to play a pass and then run beyond the defender in search of the next attacking piece of play.

Maghoma was direct when he was running with the ball and on another day his shot in the first half would have flown into the top corner rather than over the ball.

If he continues to play like he did at the weekend then like Donaldson, I am confident he will continue to find the back of the net and create chances for his team mates.

The final positive I think we should take from the weekend’s game is the increased amount of fans that turned up to watch the match.

For the first time in a while, St.Andrews saw a crowd of over 20,000 in the league and even though it was just over that previously mentioned figure, it was refreshing to see so many fans there.

Albeit, the visitors did bring over 3,000, but it added to the atmosphere and if that could happen every week, I think it would encourage more home fans to come and support their team because they would want to out-voice the opposition.

Blues fans, do you agree with the three points that have been made? What did you make of the game? Let us know in the comment section down below!
