Birmingham City have a pretty robust midfield trio when you look at how we performed last season but like everything in life, there is always room for improvement.

Here at Vital Birmingham, we always like to give a different angle on things so I thought it would be interesting to take a look at three former midfielders that I believe could do well in the current Blues squad.

Last season, our main point in the team was based around the rotation of Maikel Kieftenbeld, Stephen Gleeson and David Davis, as well as then inclusion of the attacking midfield trio of Jon Toral, Andy Shinnie and Diego Fabbrini, but I think there are former players who could potentially fit the bill to improve our squad.

The former 2011 Carling Cup is still under contract with his current club Sunderland until the end of next season but I am sure that he will part ways with the Black Cats at some point this summer with Big Sam only really using him as a bit-part player in the second half of the season.

During the 2015/16 campaign, Larsson made 19 appearances in all domestic competitions, failing to find the back of the net once and with Leeds United reportedly interested in his services, I think he will be on his way out of the Stadium of Light during this summer transfer window.

To me, the 31-year-old central midfielder would add that little bit of knowledge to the side that we might have been missing at some points last season and I think if we were to make a move for him, the former Arsenal man would be a fantastic addition to the squad.

On his day, Morrison was a top class player and I think he could fill the gap for us that Toral has left behind. Although he is under contract with Italian side Lazio until 2019, he only made a handful of appearances for them last season, 7 to be exact, and I think we could sign him for a small fee.

As good as Fabbrini is, I think he will need better competition than what Shinnie will offer him next season and I think a move for Morrison could be something that might develop over the summer months with Gary Rowett supposedly looking abroad at what talent is on offer.

Yes, he may have divided opinions between some fans, but there is no denying that the 23-year-old is a fantastic talent and I think Rowett could be the man to finally finish what Lee Clark started and with Lazio wanting to get rid, we could potentially snatch him for around £500,000.

The former vice-captain of the club hasn’t really had the best of times since he left Blues in August 2014 to sign for Cardiff City and with Leeds United opting out of signing him at the end of his loan spell, could we make a move to resign him this summer?

I would personally like to see Adeyemi back down St.Andrews because I thought he was a powerful and creative midfielder and when he left I was quite disappointed because I thought he had a big future ahead of him.

His time with the Bluebirds hasn’t been quite what he had hoped it to be and that is why I think he may leave them this summer. The 24-year-old made 24 appearances in all competitions last season and is valued at around £500,000, a price tag which shouldn’t put us off making a move for him. I believe he is the sort of midfielder that Rowett is looking for this summer and with previous championship experience, why not!

Out of the three former midfielders that I have mentioned, I would love to see Adeyemi return to the club but with our current lack of creativity in that number 10 role, Morrison would also be a good should.

Blues fans, which former midfielder would you like to see return to the club this summer? Let us know in the comment section down below!
