Three Defenders Birmingham Could Sign For Nothing This Summer

|

Having conceded 68 goals last season, Garry Monk will likely seek to make major improvements to the defence this summer.

The signing of Marc Roberts from Barnsley hasn’t worked out, and while Harlee Dean has certainly proven more successful, the number of goals that we let in played a major role in us struggling near the relegation places.

Certainly, when the manager came in at the start of the March, our defence improved markedly, but it still requires some major new additions to ensure we are fighting at the right end of the table. With the club’s FFP issues, Monk may look to free agents as a possible solution: So, who could we look at?

Robert Huth

His injury record is a major concern, but the 33-year-old could be a very astute signing if he stays fit. He was integral to Leicester’s Premier League title-winning season in 15/16, and despite his age, he would likely prove a valuable addition to the squad.

The centre-back has never been blessed with pace, but he is commanding in the air, and would certainly give the team some much-needed assuredness at the back.

Miguel Britos

Out of contract this summer, the Uruguayan had been a regular for Watford up until this season. A foot injury kept him out for a few months between November and February, and he never regained his place in the side.

Wages would likely prove a stumbling block, but at 32 years of age, he still has a few years left in him at the top level. A left-footed player, he would also offer some balance in the centre of defence with both Morrison, Roberts and Dean all being right-footed.

Nedum Onuoha

QPR’s captain will leave Loftus Road this summer, and at the age of 31, he certainly isn’t over the hill. With his Rangers side having conceded two more than us last season though, there are question marks over whether he would be an improvement on what we have already got.

Still, his 188 matches in the Premier League with Manchester City, Sunderland and at the London club would offer some additional experience to the squad.
