Thoughts on Davis

David Davis has been a wall the past two season; a real gem from the otherwise dark Clark era.

But recently, he has been the butt of a lot of critical comments from the fans in particular on the social network site; Twitter.

Against Reading in the first game of the season, Davis came on as a substitute, gave the ball away a few times and then tripped up the opposition to conceded a penalty. It was a game to forget for him.

It’s not the first time this season that Mr Reliable has had a somewhat out of character game. In pre-season when he has played, his passing is woeful. It puts us on the back foot and that’s against lesser opposition, no disrespect intended for our pre-season opponents.

So what has happened to make Davis change? I have looked at numerous causes and I am still none the wiser, but here are a few options.

Maybe it is just lack of playing time and he takes a while to get into games. He has been on the bench for a few pre-season games and this has lead to a lack of match time. This may be an option, but it is the same for other players such as Toral and he seems to be flourishing; grabbing the bull by the horns.

Another reason may be the distinct lack of confidence that Rowett has shown in Davis. Rowett was quick to praise Shinnie last year but Davis was just someone who is not mentioned a lot. Despite being one of our top players last year, he seems to have been shoved to the side this year. Maybe that’s effected him?

I don’t actually believe these theories. I am merely trying to understand the change in someone who used to be a rock for Birmingham City and who now is a regular on the bench.

It is baffling how good he was and now he can’t string two passes together. The one thing that we can guarantee still, is a yellow card per game.

But even his yellow cards are different. Last season he picked up cards for being a pain for the attack. Breaking up play and trying to slow it down whenever possible. This year, it seems to be due to pent up frustration. I’m afraid, this will only get worse with the more he sees a youngster from Arsenal getting in the team before he does.
