This latest move by Birmingham just doesn’t make any sense to me – Opinion

Just because the window is closed, doesn’t mean things stop moving.

It’s not just outgoings, it’s incomings too. At least that’s the case at St Andrew’s as the Blues yesterday announced the signing of Miguel Fernandez on a six-month contract. According to BCFC.com:

“The Spanish midfielder or forward has been drafted in to develop with the Club’s Under-23s. Fernandez, 19, came through the ranks at UE Cornella in Spain and spent a trial period with Blues last season.”

Ordinarily I’d think this was good news, I’ve said before that the club could do with a little bit more firepower in the forward department, even if it is for the U23s, at least there you’ve got the potential that he’ll bring something to the table in a few years time. However, this one falls into a rather different category.

Blues fans weren’t exactly thrilled about this news, and if I’m being honest, neither am I. I’m not going to get too excited over someone who we’re not going to see a lot of if he’s stuck playing with the young sides.

Although there is one bit about the deal I am slightly curious about, and is yet another reason why I’m not exactly jumping up and down like a lunatic over the news. The Spaniard has only signed on a six-month contract, which to me is just incredibly bizarre.

A one-year contract I could understand; it’d essentially be a year-long trial to see if things work out then offer him a new contract. A two-year contract might make more sense, you can send him out on loan for a season, then give him a few months in the first team and if things work out you take things from there. There’s something weird about giving him a contract for six months though. You may as well have just kept him on trial for that long.

What do you make of it all? Why do you think the deal is so short? Your guess is as good as mine.
