The Nick Townsend debate

Much has been spoke of young Brummie stopper Nick Townsend and his undoubted potential. But, the question we really need to ask ourselves is wheather or not the Solihull born keeper is actually good enough to be our second choice goalkeeper?

It seems as if Blues will attempt to snap up a first choice stopper in the next few weeks with Wes Foderingham and David Forde being the most likely candidates. But will they go the extra mile and get a proven second choice goalkeeper? A spot we have never had to fill due to the loyalty of ‘Club legend’ Colin Doyle.

Townsend is highly rated by many in and around the club and is being touted as the man to fill that Colin Doyle role. But for me, the back end of his loan at Conference Club Lincoln City suggests that he may not be ready to fill the number two role.

Townsend was brought back to Sincil Bank in July 2014 after a very impressive end to the 13/14 season where he soon became a fan favourite. He started the 14/15 in similar fashion cementing his place as the number one keeper. Unfortunately,
Townsend went crashing back down to earth with a bump.

A string of below-par performances and a clause in his loan contract after the sacking of Lee Clark, he missed Lincoln’s FA Cup qualifying game in October. This brought to an end his first taste of professional action as he was yet to make another appearance for the Non League club after failing to break back into the team and was recalled by the new Blues gaffer. He saw out the rest of the season back in the U21’s. Although impressing enough as he managed to earn himself a new two year deal. Causing a great amount of questions about our young stopper.

Now the ink on his contract is firmly dry, many are getting the hint that he will start the season as the number two keeper, although there is nothing I would love more than to see a Boyhood Bluenose fill the boots of Colin Doyle, I just don’t feel he is ready to push for a number one spot in what could potentially be a Top Six team.

Personally I would love to see him go out on loan in League 1/ League 2 and play regular football next season rather than sitting on the sidelines at Blues. But maybe you guys have other opinions?
