The Maghoma Signing

Birmingham City have today completed the signing of Jacques Maghoma. The 27 year-old former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder has put pen-to-paper on a two-year contract with a one-year option.

Maghoma is a powerful midfield player who can play put-wide or through the middle. Born in Zaire, Maghoma began his career at Tottenham Hotspur’s youth academy before moving to Burton Albion in 2009 under the wing of then-manager Paul Peschisolido. Back then, Gary Rowett was the assistant manager at the Pirelli Stadium and has been chasing Maghoma for a while.

Blues were linked with Maghoma in the national press a few weeks back but today, the deal has finally been done.

I have looked a Twitter comments to try and gain an understand of how the Owls’ fans feel about him. The impression I get is that, in Maghoma, Blues have a decent player ability-wise who needs a kick up the backside. Rowett knows the Blues fans would never accept laziness on the football pitch and, with that in mind, I am confident that the work ethic of the team will not suffer as a result of the signing.

One observation I have made in Rowett’s short tenure is that he seems to force a work rate out of players. Demarai Gray has been described as lazy in the past, but in the second half of last season, his defensive team work massively improved – so there is no reason to think Maghoma will be any different.

As I always do, I will wait to form an opinion of my own. Blues fans will get behind the player as always and give him their backing. The rest is down to Jacques.
