The Gary Rowett Saga

Speculation is always rife at Birmingham City. If it`s not Clayton Donaldson, it`s Demarai Gray. If it`s not Demarai Gray, it`s our manager Gary Rowett.

Firstly, Gary will take it as a compliment that he has been linked with the vacant managerial posts at Fulham and QPR, financially two of the Championship`s big boys. He is being recognised for the fantastic job he is doing at St. Andrew`s.

But secondly, it`s up to Rowett to decide if the grass is greener. Yes, both sides have more financial clout than Blues, but with capital comes added pressure.

At Blues, Rowett is in a no-lose situation. Currently punching above their weight in sixth place, even the most optimistic Bluenose would have accepted a mid-table finish if offered to them back in August. Can the same be said for the two London clubs he has been linked with?

Understandably, a manager`s frustration can grow if he is unable to bring the players in to improve his squad. But Rowett was well aware of the circumstances when he took the job and since then, the picture both on and off the field has brightened somewhat.

I`m not for one second suggesting Rowett must spend the rest of his career in B9. But both QPR and Fulham would be a side step for a manager who will, eventually, have Premier League clubs bashing his door down.

Historically, neither of the two clubs is bigger than Blues who have a bigger fan base, a bigger stadium and, if you weren`t already convinced, Blues have spent more seasons (57) in the top flight than both Fulham & QPR combined (48).

Blues` hierarchy yesterday released a very brief statement confirming that no approach has been made for the manager. But it wouldn`t be a surprise if that call came today. If and when it does, it`s over to you, Gary.
