The ‘Concentrate on the League’ Cliche

Ok, we`re out of the FA Cup. I`m not going to say we deserved otherwise, because we didn`t take our chances. But the biggest cause for optimism was the unexpected strength the squad apparently has.

Clayton Donaldson, Stephen Gleeson, Paul Caddis, Jon Toral and Tomasz Kuszczak – all first team regulars, were left out. The performance proved that we do have a squad beyond the 11 Gary Rowett usually picks. With a couple more additions, this should stand Blues in good stead for the second half of the season.

It would have been nice to revenge the farcical 8-0 drubbing received the last time Bournemouth visited St. Andrew`s. But James Vaughan`s penalty is still flying across the Mediterranean.

The clichéd response to crashing out of the cup at the first hurdle is ‘we can concentrate on the league`. In Blues` case, that rings true. We are not the favourites for the play-offs, so in order for Blues to make it, all focus must be on the Championship. Then maybe, just maybe?

This could be a defining fortnight for Blues with three away games (Forest, Derby and Bristol City) and a home fixture (Ipswich) on the horizon. The aim should be to pick up no less than six points. If Blues can manage that, it would leave us in a decent position. Anything more is a bonus.
