The Chase for Donaldson

Now Leeds have completed the signing of Leicester’s Chris Wood, it would see only Reading remain in the chase for Blues frontman Clayton Donaldson.

Reading have had a bid worth up to £1.6 million turned down, with GetReading.com reporting that the Midlands club are waiting for at least £1m up front before considering any offers.

Gary Rowett has also admitted that ‘every player has his price’, even though claiming the player is not for sale. Birmingham have expressed a wish to build the next few seasons teams around Donaldson being the spearhead of attack.

It is quite obvious that Blues do not want to sell, however they are mindful of Donaldson potentially wanting to leave and also of Reading putting down money for a 31 year old that is too good to turn down.

So, it is completely now down to, Reading. Given that Donaldson has found great form at Blues, I would think he’d want to continue that. We already pay him a good wage and he may well earn himself another contract on the back of another good season.

With that said, should Reading come up with the money, there is no doubt he’ll leave if a bid is accepted. Reading will be able to offer him that one last big contract, that for a player ending his playing career he would very much be thinking about.

It is likely that this saga won’t drag on, Reading know Blues position and they’ll either come up with the money or go for other targets. I don’t see this being an Adeyemi situation that leaves us in the lurch just days into the season.

Unless, Reading try for other targets, don’t sign them and then as a result come back with what we want for Donaldson – which would no doubt leave us short.

I know, none of you want to see Clayton Donaldson leave, but do you think Reading will come up with the money?

Blues want £1 million now and add-ons further down the line.
