As with every football club up and down the country, fans always want to see what young talent the club has to display and Birmingham City fans are no different.

Over the past few years, we have see some fantastic talents come through out youth system, like Jack Butland, Nathan Redmond and Demarai Gray, and this season, Blues manager Gary Rowett looks even more likely to give even more youngsters a shot in the first team.

During preseason, Jack Storer, Josh Cogley, Reece Brown, Viv Solomon-Otabor and Koby Arthur were all given the chance to impress the manager and it is fair to say that the majority of them really took their chances.

Storer, 18, made his first start for Blues professionally on Tuesday night in a disappointing defeat at home to League One Oxford United, as did Cogley, and Brown made an appearance in Saturday’s Championship opener, and it looks like we could be seeing more and more of them throughout the season.

Congolese winger Solomon-Otabor has been with the first team for the past season so I expect to see him coming off the bench almost every game this year, but Blues fans can’t expect the world from the youngsters.

It was different when we had Lee Clark in charge because lets face it, the kids were the only thing that really got us through those difficult times.

However, now we have more experienced players, we need to be careful with our expectations. Yes, they know what is expected of them in the first team but we have to remember that they are still only young and it can be quite overwhelming at times so we shouldn’t get on their backs if things don’t quite go to plan immediately.

For example, during the game against Oxford, Storer picked out some wonderful passes but his efforts on goal weren’t all too good, but lets not forget, he scored seven goals in preseason so as long as he keeps getting into those positions, the goals will come.

The same can be said about Blues’ new arrival, Che Adams. At 20, a £2 million price tag is quite a big weight to have on your shoulders, and after he set himself a goal target of 15, if he doesn’t start off well, I fear that some Blues fans might question why we brought him in.

However, give him time and I am sure he will repay us by scoring the goals. Similarly to Storer, if Adams gets in those positions, I am positive he will score plenty of goals in a Birmingham City shirt.

Blues fans, do you agree that we should expect too much from the young players or should they now be able to take the responsibilities that come with being a first team player? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
