Talent and Arrogance

Don’t necessarily have to go together, but it seems with Nicklas Bendtner they are effectively married.

There is no doubting the class of Bendtner and he certainly has a good future ahead of him, but a bit of humility would go a long way with this youngster.

We’ve all seen his previous outbursts about thinking he’s good enough to walk into the Arsenal side and so on, and he doesn’t seem to be able to let it go. Again, he is not winning himself any friends and quite frankly we have already seen extremely talented footballers limit their options with the big clubs because of their attitudes and inability to put their brains into gear before speaking.

I’ll start with the Arsenal comments before moving onto his strop over McSheffrey taking the penalty in our last match in another article.

SSN have carried the following quote from Bendtner:

‘Arsenal need to give me a sign they are going to play me. I`ve had a taste of regular football and I don`t want to be back in the reserves again.’

The lad is 18, playing well but is nowhere near the finished product yet he thinks he should be guaranteed the same sort of treatment as Henry or Rooney?

A period of loan for a young player is to give them an insight into first team football, give them some experience and confidence as they continue to learn the game. It’s not there for them to become so big headed they think they can walk into any squad in the Premiership.

It seems highly unlikely that he will remain at Arsenal much longer, I doubt he has endeared himself to their first team with his whinging and he’s hardly helping himself with the team or fans here.

Whoever his agent or advisor is should take him to one side and let him know about burning bridges and the damage a ‘reputation’ can do to a player, however talented.

I certainly don’t mind him leaving Arsenal, the club have made it abundantly clear they will do whatever it takes to sign him permanently and you have to hope these quotes are part of a strategy to entice Arsenal into parting company with him. What I wouldn’t want to see is him benefit from his season on loan here and move elsewhere.

The top clubs won’t sign him, certainly not with the guarantees on first team football he keeps asking for. It’s unlikely with his own self belief he would want to sign for the package of clubs like Watford and those whose aim is survival, so he would be looking at (at least in the Premiership) the likes of Bolton, Vile, Spurs and it’s even doubtful that one half decent season in the Championship would entice them to guarantee a starting place when fit.

This puts us, subject to promotion, in a very strong position. He knows the team, knows the staff and having been such an important and regular part of our side could think he is ‘guaranteed’ more football by staying with us and not moving onto pastures knew.

Whatever happens, it would be nice to go a few weeks and the only news about the player is positive reviews for his performances and not the usual crap he makes headlines for.
