Kevin Summerfield was on Birmingham’s books for a matter of months in what turned out to be a strange ride for the former player.

He joined Birmingham from West Brom and was loaned out to Walsall in order to get some first team football. Blues recalled Sommerfield to play against Walsall in the FA cup.

Blues assistant manager did so, and scored the winner. Then it was back to Walsall out on loan.

‘I went to Walsall and it was a step down a couple of divisions.

‘They were in the bottom three or four (in the old Division Three).

‘But there was something about the club, the place. You could get on with everybody.

I went, did OK. We drew Birmingham in the cup and they didn’t give me permission to play.

‘I was called back by Birmingham, I played and ended up scoring (in extra-time, the only goal).

“I remember it was a low shot to the corner, to the left of where we sit now in the dugouts (in front of the Tilton Road End).

‘Then, a week later, I was back at Walsall.

‘I never got any stick from Walsall about it. The fans were OK.

“They had started to do well and had a good season the next season.

‘But it was all a bit weird.’

Sommerfield made just 8 appearances for Birmingham in an unsuccessful stint with the club. However, now it all seems to be going well and long may it continue.
