Summer transfer target?

It has been reported in today`s issue of the Sun that midfielder Matthieu Flamini wants to leave Arsenal. He alleges that Arsene Wenger refuses to tell him why he is being sidelined and is desperate for more time on the pitch.

Flamini has played only once since mid-February and has been kicking his heels at the Emirates despite their recent injury and suspension crises.

Press reports suggest that he is even threatening to invoke a buy-out clause in his contract which will make him a free agent for £1.1M.

First rumours suggest that Juventus are keen to capture him, but the player himself has not ruled out staying in the Premiership.

His lawyer is quoted as stating that his client loves English football and does not necessarily want to play elsewhere in Europe.

Is there an opportunity for Blues here if they can gain promotion?

It brings to mind a similar situation when a discontented Matthew Upson was tempted to Birmingham from Arsenal as at the time he was not featuring enough in the first team.

Flamini, at 23, is the perfect age to bring into a newly-promoted team and following his woes of this season, will be hungry to establish himself as a first-choice player.

He is quick and tough, and has had the benefit of football at the highest level with Arsenal – yet his lack of first-team experience may put off teams that are looking for someone with a proven track record, meaning that the likes of Spurs and Newcastle could pass him by.

This surely could create a golden opportunity for Brady, Gold et al to make a surprise transfer swoop for him at the end of the season, as if Birmingham make it back to the Premiership they will be looking to strengthen the team in all areas of the pitch.

A decent player like Flamini ought to be occupying a prominent place on Steve Bruce`s summer shopping list.
