Gary Rowett was left frustrated after his attempts to sign a striker on loan hit the buffers late last week. The Blues manager is looking to bolster the forward area after learning of Clayton Donaldson six-week lay-off.

Paul Franks confirmed on his BBC WM phone in on Saturday evening that Rowett believed he was ‘close` to bringing in a striker who would have played in the Charlton game, which Blues lost 1-0. After the deal fell through, Nicolai Brock-Madsen was handed his first start.

Rowett admitted he will step-up his attempts to sign a striker before the loan window closes on Thursday night. However, the likes of Dwight Gayle and Kyle Lafferty, who have been mentioned in some sources, are way out of Blues` financial parameters.

The current situation makes Rowett`s decision to let Lee Novak and Wes Thomas both go out on loan seem all the more baffling. The severe lack of options up front is a body blow for Rowett who was relying on the fitness of Donaldson.

A source at Birmingham City commented- “The club are working hard behind the scenes to bring in a player before Thursday`s deadline. The other option being explored is the possible calling back of one of our players currently out on loan. The club is doing everything possible to help Gary strengthen the squad”.
