Steve McClaren threw his name into the hat to succeed Gianfranco Zola as Blues manager, Vital Birmingham understands.

The former England head coach – dubbed ‘wally with a brolly` for his disastrous reign – contacted Birmingham City representatives via his agent to express an interest in the post. However, the club were already in dialogue with Harry Redknapp and were due to meet with him in London later that evening.

McClaren has been out of work since being sacked by Derby County – for the second time – and being replaced by former Blues manager Gary Rowett last month.

Redknapp takes charge of his first game as Blues manager at Villa Park on Sunday. His team currently sit in 20th position with three games remaining. Vital Blues understands that the club have drafted up a two year contract which is likely to be discussed if he steers Blues to safety.
