Luke Turner discusses the special St Andrews atmosphere…

What an atmosphere we witnessed on Sunday, Blues fans were incredible.

Of course, for a local derby you expect the noise inside St Andrews to be electric but our fans always seem to go above and beyond expectations.

Even during the warm-up, the atmosphere began to pick up and you knew that this was just the beginning.

From the spine-tingling renditions of Keep Right On to the jubilant scenes when David Davis equalised, St Andrews really did roll back the years.

We know how good the atmosphere can be when it gets going, even when we do only have 17 odd thousand but we haven’t seen it enough.

However, Sunday was special. We probably won’t see an atmosphere like that down St Andrews again until we next play Villa at home or, I’ll whisper it quietly, we make the play-offs.

I’ve seen so much made of Villa fans on social media saying they’re the best fans in the country and make the most noise.

But where were they on Sunday?

It really was all about Blues and the home crowd.

Villa fans had their two minute spell after scoring but before and after that it was the Blues fans urging their side on as Gary Rowett`s men searched for the equaliser and then pushed for a winner.

If we can just get those few extra fans through the turnstiles for every other home fixture, then St Andrews can really start to become a fortress for us again.

When at full throttle, it’s an intimidating and unfriendly atmosphere for away sides to come and play and us fans have a huge part to play in urging their team on and helping them give that extra 10%.

Rowett and this current team clearly have something special about them and I honestly do believe that they are taking us places.

If those extra fans that came to the Villa game can see that then I really hope they come back to St Andrews and support the team.

The good times are returning down the Blues and the journey under Rowett can be made even better by more of those special St Andrews atmospheres.
