Spector Worthy of a New Deal

Jonathan Spector yesterday completed the formalities of a fresh two-year contract at Blues. Some people saw this as a strange move given the American`s injury record and the fact that he was the highest paid player in the squad last term. But his biggest asset – versatility – is a vital tool for any manager to have in their locker. The 29 year-old is an option at right back, centre back and centre midfield, and although he isn`t an amazing ball player, his reliability makes him worthy of a new deal.

Gary Rowett`s thinking would have been the aforementioned versatility factor – having Spector in the squad is effectively the same as having three players. The departure of goalkeeper Colin Doyle means the Illinois-born man is now Blues` longest serving player after signing from West Ham United in 2011 and has made 127 appearances. Spector was used as a centre back last season and performed admirably alongside one of Rob Kiernan, Michael Morrison or Paul Robinson. Whether Rowett sees him as a permanent fixture in the heart of the defence is unclear but it is well documented that the club are looking to bring in a defender, but Spector is certainly a decent back-up option.

Having started his career in English football at Manchester United after being spotted by Sir Alex Ferguson`s scouts playing for USA under 17`s in a Milk Cup fixture, he was originally destined to be a striker, but due to injuries to other players, he was drafted in to defence. His United debut came in a Community Shield match against Arsenal in 2004. After just eight appearances for the Red Devils and a season-long loan spell at Charlton Athletic, West Ham manager Alan Pardew paid £500,000 to secure his services at Upton Park before Chris Hughton eventually bought him to St. Andrew`s.

Blues fans, are you happy Spector has signed a new contract?
