NHS Blood and Transplant, the service responsible for organ donation in the UK, has launched its Sign for Life campaign. This two-week event is aimed at the nation’s football fans, encouraging them to sign the Organ Donor Register, and be part of a vital life-saving team.

As well as speaking to the fans, Sign for Life also works with football clubs to raise awareness of the issues. Last year, the inaugural year of the campaign, 27 football clubs and foundations supported Sign for Life, helping to spread the message about the shortage of organ donors, and how much difference one person can make. Teams including Manchester City, Bolton, and Newcastle all got involved to help the campaign, as well as organisations such as The Arsenal Foundation.

Every day in the UK three people die because not enough organs are being donated. Just one person can save or greatly enhance the lives of many others, but this can only happen if you’ve expressed your wishes and informed your family. This is why signing up to the Organ Donor Register is so important. NHS Blood and Transplant are hoping the passion of football fans and their clubs will help to boost the number of organ donors in the UK, and save more lives in the future.

You can follow the campaign online using #signforlife, and on NHS Organ Donation’s Twitter and Facebook pages.

If you haven’t already, you can sign the Organ Donor Register here: www.organdonation.nhs.uk/register-to-donate.

Anyone can sign so long as they live in the UK.
