Should Blues now stick or twist with thirteen games to go

|

When Birmingham City failed to bring in much during the transfer window apart from Scott Hogan, many supporters including myself felt a nervy feeling of what the months of January and February would bring.

As we stand of today we have a run of ten unbeaten games under our belt, a prized asset of Jude Bellingham to enjoy watching, a return to the squad of Keiftenbeld and a team spirit that is there for all to see. Basically an all round of satisfaction and little anxiety. Both great tonics for a club like ours when anything can happen and the unexpected often erupts.

However, Bluenoses like an edge and a bit of a challenge and with thirteen games to go – what targets need to be set?

A play-off position would require a minimum of 73 points, safety would require only 7 at best. No brainier obviously, but finishing as high as possible in the league would be the general response.

This season’s Championship is littered with unexplainable results that at times has no logic -yesterday’s result at Fulham a good case and many similar during the past fortnight. Nine points off a play-off spot with thirteen to go is tough but it takes only one weekend of favourably results to possibly reduce this to six. Game on as the pundits say.

Dream thoughts maybe, but this is the ‘edge’ that we as Bluenoses thrive on. We don’t do comfort and complacency.

Sheffield Wednesday next up and a very winnable game that could leapfrog them and then Millwall who are similar to ourselves. Six points adrift by March would be the perfect target with the Easter games being the crunch. As stated, we are in a good position with the team but still in a bit of ‘no mans land’ in the league.

All could change with thirteen games to go and with the squad now fitter and stronger we should certainly twist instead of sticking.

Not so fanciful as it seems. Two sneaky 1-0 wins in the next two games and who knows.

Although highly unlikely it’s still mathematically possible for us to go up automatically, that’s how ridiculous this league is!!. I’d just be happy with getting a good momentum going from now til the end of the season and see where that takes us, if we make the play offs great if not take the momentum into next season.

I’ve posted this on our forum but it will stand repetition.

In the games where we have taken the lead but couldn’t hold on and we went on to either draw or lose we could have had an extra 20 points. If we had only managed – say half that extra 10 points would have put us in 6th place.

      Hmm….

Momentum is good. I feel now stick with Pep. Bond is there and life is full of surprises

I guess it doesn’t hurt to dream and in theory (and I mean ‘in theory’) out of these 13 games 3 are tough: Baggies, Fulham and Preston. Conversely and equally tough: Stoke, Charlton, Hull and Huddersfield could possibly be fighting to hold on for their Championship status. Let’s hope that Hogan’s injury isn’t bad and he’ll return against either Sheff W or Millwall. I agree with Chris to carry on and sustain this good momentum is probably key at the moment.

Last time Blues fans started talking about the playoffs we hit a massive sheet of black ice and went belly up, so as I do not want to tempt fate I am just going for a few wins, enough to overcome any EFL points deductions, as I am sure they are planning one for us, and a positive end to the season such as Villa getting relegated alongside West Ham.
