Shotton an integral part moving forward

Any player who impresses throughout a season is going to attract interest from other clubs, it’s the norm in football.

So, seeing Ryan Shotton linked with a move away from St. Andrew`s didn`t surprise me at all but interest is all that it is likely to be.

Bristol City were the club linked with Shotton today but the defender seems to be settled at Blues and it`s so important that he does stay at the club.

He missed just three league games last campaign and was a mainstay in the centre of defence under all three of the managers we had.

Apart from a slight dip in form midway through the season, I’d say that Shotton was up there with David Davis as our most consistent performer.

He became our rock at the back despite the rollercoaster season and he stood up when it mattered most.

When you tell Shotton to defend, he`ll do just that. In Gianfranco Zola`s first few weeks in charge, you could see that Shotton was being told to do things that didn’t come as natural to him and that became a problem.

But, in a more defensive and solid system, Shotton stands out above the rest as a player that leads from the back, is commanding in the air and defends expertly.

Put him alongside Michael Morrison and you’ll find it hard to find a better defensive partnership in the Championship.

Under the guidance of Harry Redknapp, Shotton will continue to play a crucial role at Blues and I`m confident that he won’t be going anywhere any time soon.
