Since Gary Rowett`s departure from the club was confirmed, I have had messages from fans of other clubs, including Villa and Wolves, stating their absolute bewilderment at the decision – such is the ridiculous nature of it.

Something must have happened behind the scenes of which we do not know and will probably never find out. It can`t be as simple as waking up on a Wednesday morning after beating Ipswich Town the previous evening and thinking ‘I`m going to sack the manager today`.

Gary Rowett was one of the best managers Birmingham City have had in years. Working on a shoe string budget, he has led us from second bottom of the Championship and certain relegation, to the brink of a play-off spot. The football hasn`t always been a fantastic spectacle, but that is by the by, he has done an outstanding job with the players he has got.

Let me make this crystal clear. We are three points off third place, we have lost as few games as Newcastle United this season. What grounds do we have to sack the manager? Whatever the reason, it won`t be good enough. It`s an absolutely disgraceful decision made by new owners who were supposed to be leading us into better times.

Perhaps by no co-incidence, two new directors attended their first Blues game on Tuesday evening and by Wednesday afternoon, Rowett is no more. Undoubtedly, this decision has been taken by non-footballing experts who always think they know better.

Even if a new manager succeeds, and for the sake of the club and fans I hope he does, it still doesn`t make Rowett`s departure a good thing.

As at every club, Rowett had his critics. And it seems like the social media keyboard warriors (most of whom do not bother to turn up at St. Andrews) have won. But I think I speak for 98% of Bluenoses when I say I am utterly shocked, saddened and ashamed of the decision taken today.

Via a statement on bcfc.com, owners Trillion Trophy Asia said they wanted ‘to lead the Club to a bright and exciting future`. This, as a starting point, is horrific. I hope Gary`s name is chanted to the high heavens on Saturday.
