Sask’s Thoughts Vs Blackburn

Blackburn Rovers had a pretty average team, that we made to look good. Goals win you games and two defensive errors allowed two very good strikers of the ball to have free shots at our goal. This cannot happen and unfortunately, despite how defence being singled out for praise in recent weeks, the quality was sadly lacking yesterday.

Listen, the fans and a lot of the management will point to some key decisions that the officials got wrong. Jordi Gomez, who I actually highlighted as the one to watch for Blackburn, made a dreadful challenge in the middle of the park which many thought would have been punished further. The penalty decision that wasn’t given after a clear foul on Donaldson just summed up the frustration of the game. This decision was at 1-0 down so could have given us a lift at a crucial point in the fixture, sadly it wasn’t to be.

Overall, I was very disappointed with the performance overall. As a positive note, I think Solomon-Otabor played well when he was able to run at the opposition in the last few stages but his impact was too late in the game. The disappointment for me was that we dropped too deeply. Against a team that has been struggling to score goals, why we gave them the respect that we did is very baffling to me. We should have pressed high and condensed them, like we did in the previous game against Hull City.

I feel that we adapted our game to the oppositions. This shouldn’t be the case. We should play our form of football and let the opposition try and counter us. We should hold all the cards, and not let the other team get a foothold in the game. Consistency is our biggest fault this season and it is probably only due to other teams around us faltering, that has allowed us to keep creeping up the table.

For me, we have to put this game behind us and move forward. It is a derby against Wolves this weekend and I’d like a fighting spirit to be shown by the players to put this game behind us.
