Sask’s Thoughts On Robbo

Paul Robinson has the passion that Blues’ fans absolutely adore. His almost weekly yellow card wins many of us money on the betting sweep-stake. But is he good enough to be a first team starter this season?

I can’t fault Robbo’s attitude. As a player, he is hard working both on the pitch and the training ground and his command of the dressing room seems to be second to none.

His pace has decreased somewhat in the coming months which has led to his last ditch tackling becoming increasingly better. (You can’t fault my positive stance today can you?) And he always throws himself in front of the ball; a skill that I think is only matched by Morrison.

Unfortunately, despite this, the pace of current forwards in the Championship will expose Robinson’s lack of pace and so I believe it would be hazardous for him to obtain a place in the heart of the defence.

Having said this, I still think he can do a job for the Blues’ on the pitch but in a wider position. Squad rotation is a key feature of the modern game and the manager is often called to make selection choices based on fatigue levels rather than ability in the latter stages of the season.

Due to this, at right back, if Spector, Grounds and Morrison all stay in the defence, it leaves just Caddis as a right back. We need cover for this position and Robbo is a decent replacement if Caddis gets injured or needs a breather.

Having him on the coaching team is a massive boost for us. His experience through every level of football means that he quickly games respect from his fellow team mates and it also means he surely has some pearls of wisdom.

He knows what this club is all about and the ethos of the club is what makes our Birmingham City really stand out. Our fans are one of the most passionate bunch out there and Robbo certainly matches that mind set.
